Big Bill Broonzy's "Sings Folk Songs" captures the legendary bluesman's final studio recordings at Chicago's WFMT radio station in 1962, just six months before his death from lung cancer. This Folkways release documents Broonzy's deliberate shift from electric Chicago blues back to his acoustic Delta roots, featuring intimate performances of traditional folk songs that influenced the emerging 1960s folk revival movement. The album includes Broonzy's definitive versions of "John Henry" and "Frankie and Johnny," which became templates for folk artists like Bob Dylan and Dave Van Ronk, while his guitar fingerpicking techniques on tracks like "Glory of Love" directly influenced the acoustic blues revival that swept college campuses throughout the decade.
